UK Construction Week is coming to London next May

The UK Construction Week (UKCW) is coming to London for the very first time next May and thousands are expected to gather at the ExCel to celebrate and learn about an ever-growing industry.

Between the 3rd and the 5th of May, visitors will get a chance to explore around 40,000 square meters of exhibition space, attend over 200 talks, and be some of the first to see new product launches from over 300 exhibiting companies, including brands such as Bosch, Cemex, Schneider, and HS2, among many others.

With ten different specialist zones, this year’s UKCW will be focusing on everything currently happening in the industry, how it’s changed since the start of the pandemic, and what is yet to come, from the forthcoming Building Safety Act to digitalisation, net-zero goals and the industry’s energy future. Featuring some of the pioneers of culture change with a star-studded line-up of 150 speakers that includes George Clarke, Helen Yeulet, and Dame Judy Hackitt, the expo’s focus will be on how these changes can be fostered across the whole sector.

As Nathan Garnett, Event Director writes, “[the] theme for 2022 is culture change, because, as a sector, that is what is needed for us to tackle the multiple challenges of reaching [our] net-zero targets, creating a new diverse skilled workforce, and putting safety and quality first.”

The theme of this year’s expo is very much in line with the theme set out for Earth Day 2022, which is encouraging people and businesses to invest in our planet. Rather than a simple and pleasant coincidence, this alignment of the two organisations’ priorities could potentially signify a shift in the industrial paradigm, particularly if both companies and individuals are committed to achieving the goals established.

Although sustainability, the reality of net zero carbon, and ecological accountability are expected to be some of the main subjects concerning this edition of the UKCW, the organisers have put together a comprehensive panel of speakers whose talks will touch on a variety of industry-specific issues. These will include, namely, discussing the future of construction in the education sector, building site efficiency, and the role of women in the construction industry.

The UKCW’s Role Model initiative will also be returning this year, and previous winners, as well as this year’s nominees, will be present at the expo, offering advice to career changers, services veterans and to college students. For anyone unfamiliar with the Role Model program, it was devised by the UKCW as a way of celebrating the industry’s talented professionals and unsung heroes who are willing to inspire others, particularly members of the younger generations, and celebrate the fact that construction can provide so many varied and wonderful opportunities.

On the product launch front, there will be plenty to discover over the expo’s three days, from Airgreen’s HOME-ISO, an easy, sustainable, and efficient solution for housing insulation, to Specsavers’ range of prescription safety glasses. However, IDE Systems’ energy management tool, Erica, may just be the most intriguing new product announced so far, as it was built with the objective of reducing power wastage, costs and carbon emissions.

Registering for UKCW also grants ticket-holders free access to Grand Designs Live (30th April – 8th May), The Offsite Show (3rd – 5th May), Concrete Expo (3rd – 5th May), and Green Living Live (30th April – 8th May).
